His attempts to modify a Xerox laser printer to notify users when print jobs were complete were thwarted by the fact that the printer’s software was proprietary and couldn’t be modified.
This seemingly small frustration crystallized a larger concern for Stallman: software was becoming a tool of control rather than empowerment. Users were becoming dependent on software they couldn’t understand, modify, or share.
The GNU Project: A Complete Free Operating System
In 1983, Stallman announced the GNU Project (GNU’s Not Unix—a recursive acronym typical of hacker humour). The goal was ambitious: create a complete operating system that would be free for anyone to use, study, modify, and distribute.
Stallman didn’t just want to create free software—he wanted to create a movement. He articulated a philosophy of software freedom based on four essential freedoms:
- Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose
- Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works and change it so it does your computing as you wish
